In 1973, T.J. Martell was a Madison, NJ high school student battling leukemia. He asked his father, Tony, a record company executive, to raise a million dollars for research so that “no one else will have to experience what I’m going through.” Two years later, after T.J. passed away at the age of 19, Tony set out to fulfill his promise. The first fundraiser was a Jazz event held at Buddy Rich’s nightclub in New York City. It was attended by Tony’s friends, including Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington. This first event raised $50,000 and the T.J. Martell Foundation was born.
Today, the T.J. Martell Foundation is the music industry’s leading foundation that funds innovative medical research focused on finding treatments and cures for cancer.
